A lifetime of collecting and a 20 year desire to open a Vintage Shop saw Kylie open the Eclectic Mix in April 2022. Collecting was always a family love with Kylie starting with old buttons and china.
The Eclectic Mix lives up to its name with a scooter out the front. On entry the store is bulging with quality pre-loved items – books, buttons, much loved teddies and retro toys with an array of pre digital cameras sitting alongside ‘good china’, cut crystal glasses and bowls. For antique lovers Kylie recently took in a 19th century Boulle Cabinet style cabinet which sits nicely beside a ‘dream project’ washstand.
Kylie’s retail background of over 33 years saw her in good stead to open the ‘Mix’. From managing high end retail to charity shops she had a natural connection with customers. This is reflected in the Edith Street premises with a focus on community from a place to chat; a community jigsaw a resident artist and monthly tea leaf reading. Many customers arrive skeptical and thinking it may be fun, but leaving with interest on what has been revealed about them.
Kylie’s commitment to customer service saw her being a proud finalist in the 2023 Queensland Community Achievement Awards. She was nominated by a customer for the shop being “more than a business – it’s a haven of inclusivity and heartfelt hospitality.” adding that “Kylie’s daily mission is to make every customer feel valued and heard, going the extra mile, even delivering purchases to those in need.” She is also a repository for food items and sleeping bags as part of her volunteer work with Rosie’s and Wynnum Community Place.
Kylie is a great lover of the Wynnum Village community feel with the owners being hands on operators. She views this being a key ‘Point of Difference’ to other precincts. She really hopes it’s not lost and the Wynnum character remains.
