Opera House to Wynnum
It was a childhood passion for sewing and creating that led Leanne to fashion her own style of handbags and accessories, ultimately leading her to take on The Collective Store in Wynnum.
In the heart of Wynnum at Bay Terrace, The Collective Store is a colourful showcase of Australian brands and handmade creations from over 100 designers, makers and artists. Items are sold on consignment making it cost effective for the creators to promote their wares.
In a previous life, owner Leanne had a key role working at the Sydney Opera House in the Chief Executive Office. She enjoyed being part of many events at the Opera House mixing with VIP’s and celebrities, and attending many wonderful performances, including comedian Billy Connolly and the wildly creative Yoko Ono.
It was after Leanne and family moved to Brisbane 20 years ago she reignited her creative passion. She launched her own small handmade business and developed her LaLaLea Handmade range, specialising in handbags showcasing colourful fabrics designed by Australian female pattern designers, and washable paper. “Washable paper is a plant based leather alternative and an interesting medium to create and sew with”, Leanne explains. “It’s quite popular overseas, and I was excited to work with it and love the unique feature and contrast it gave my handmade bags.” She grew her label adding women’s fashion and accessories to the range.
Leanne became a regular part of the Brisbane Maker Community presenting her wares at markets run by BrisStyle and The Market Folk. She became inspired by the creative talent in the Brisbane region and was keen to be part of showcasing this talent. In 2024, as a maker herself and supplier, she jumped at the opportunity to take ownership of The Collective Store
Why Wynnum? Leanne fondly remembers spending many weekends with her young family enjoying the Wynnum foreshore … and today finds the Bayside to have a relaxed and friendly ‘holiday’ ambience.
She loves being able to talk with customers and creators and is in the store most days. As a maker herself she understands the creating and selling process. She has brought her corporate experience and knowledge of social media to continue the legacy of The Collective Store that began some 15 years ago.
The Collective Store is at 104 Bay Terrace, Wynnum and is open Monday to Saturday.
